Both half ton trucks are changing over this fall, with new engines on each side. The decision comes down to diesel or hybrid, how you tow, and the work you ask the truck to do between Farmington and the job.
Walk any parking lot in St. Francois County, from the First State Community Center in Farmington to a feed store in Fredericktown, and you'll count a lot of Ford F-150s and Chevrolet Silverado 1500s. People here have strong opinions about both, and most of those opinions were formed on trucks that are about to be replaced.
This fall both trucks are changing. Ford published its 2027 F-150 changes in September, including a new base engine. Chevrolet redesigned the Silverado 1500 for 2027 with two new V8s and expects deliveries to start later this year. Below is how the two line up as of late October 2026, based on what Ford and Chevrolet have published.
Quick answer: The clearest split is diesel versus hybrid. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the one with a diesel, the 3.0L Duramax, plus a new 6.6L V8 rated at 481 horsepower. The Ford F-150 is the one with a hybrid that can run tools off up to 7.2 kW of onboard power, and for 2027 it adds BlueCruise hands free driving while towing on prequalified divided highways.

What Engines Can You Get in the 2027 Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
Both brands reshuffled their engine lists, and the split between them is clearer than it's been in years. The Ford F-150 offers a hybrid and no diesel. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers a diesel and no hybrid.
Ford F-150
- 3.0L EcoBoost V6: the new base engine for 2027, replacing the 2.7L. Ford says it delivers about 10 to 11 percent more torque in the range where everyday driving happens.
- 3.5L EcoBoost V6: 500 lb-ft of torque and the engine behind Ford's 13,500 pound maximum tow rating on a properly equipped truck.
- 5.0L V8: 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft, and back on King Ranch and Platinum for the first time since 2023.
- 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid: 570 lb-ft and available Pro Power Onboard up to 7.2 kW.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2.7L TurboMax four cylinder: updated for 2027 and rated at 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft.
- 5.7L V8: new, rated at 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft.
- 6.6L V8: new, rated at 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft.
- 3.0L Duramax diesel: 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft.
Every 2027 Silverado engine pairs with a 10 speed automatic. If you put a lot of highway miles on a truck and like diesel range, the Silverado is the one that offers it. If you run tools off the truck, camp or deal with power outages after spring storms, the PowerBoost and its onboard generator are hard to match.
Farmington driver tip
Fall is a changeover season on both lots. A 2026 F-150 on our lot may still carry the 2.7L EcoBoost, and a leftover 2026 Silverado elsewhere will have the outgoing V8s. Check the engine on the window sticker before you compare numbers.

What Does Each Truck Offer for Towing and Hands Free Highway Driving?
Ford rates the F-150 at up to 13,500 pounds when a SuperCrew 4x4 with the 3.5L EcoBoost and 6.5 foot box is fitted with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow axle. Chevrolet rates the 2027 Silverado 1500 at up to 13,700 pounds with the new 5.7L V8, and up to 12,000 pounds with the 3.0L Duramax. Both maximums come from one specific setup, so compare the rating on the exact trucks you're looking at.
Hands free driving with a trailer behind you is the bigger news this year. For 2027, Ford added BlueCruise with Towing to the F-150, which allows hands free driving on more than 130,000 miles of prequalified divided highways while pulling a boat, camper or trailer. It's offered from XLT and Tremor up through Platinum on trucks equipped with BlueCruise and needs an active plan. Limits apply by trailer type, size and weight, and the driver has to stay attentive the whole time.
Chevrolet's answer is Super Cruise with trailering, standard on the High Country and ZR2, with availability on other trims depending on how the truck is equipped. Both systems work on mapped divided highways, so they'd help most on interstate runs like I-55 rather than on two lane roads like MO 32 through the hills.
For hitching up in the driveway, the Ford F-150 offers Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, which lines the truck up with the trailer, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which lets you steer the trailer in reverse with a knob.

How Do the Cabs and Work Features Compare?
Chevrolet put a lot into the 2027 Silverado cab. Every trim gets a 16.3 inch center touchscreen and a 12.2 inch digital driver display, and the ZR2 and High Country add an 11.5 inch passenger screen and a head up display.
The Ford F-150 leans on features that earn their keep on a job site or a farm:
- Pro Access Tailgate: a section of the gate opens sideways, handy when a trailer tongue sits right behind the bumper and a fully lowered gate would hit it.
- Interior Work Surface: the center console lid folds out into a flat surface for paperwork, a laptop or lunch.
- Pro Power Onboard: exportable power for saws, compressors and lights, up to 7.2 kW with the hybrid.
- Carhartt edition: the first F-150 Carhartt, on the XLT Crew Cab 4x4, with orders open and deliveries in early 2027.
Both trucks are available as work trims and as plush ones, so think about the features you'll use every day. A contractor in Desloge running a generator off the bed has different needs than a commuter driving to a job in Festus.

Which Off Road Version Fits Missouri Back Roads?
Both brands build a mild off road trim and a serious one. On the Ford side that's the F-150 Tremor and the F-150 Raptor. For 2027 Ford added entry versions of both that keep the off road hardware and drop some comfort features, which brings the price of entry down.
Chevrolet offers the Silverado Trail Boss with 34 inch mud terrain tires and a 2 inch lift, and the ZR2 with 35 inch mud terrain tires, a 2 inch lift, front and rear electronic locking differentials and Multimatic DSSV dampers. The Custom Trail Boss sits lower in the lineup.
For most people here, the mild trims cover it. Gravel county roads, a muddy deer lease or the off road vehicle area at St. Joe State Park don't call for desert racing suspension. The Raptor and the ZR2 make sense when going fast over rough ground is the point.
Should You Buy the Ford F-150 or the Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
List what the truck tows, how far you drive each week and whether you need power at the job site. Those three answers settle most of it.
